What counts as European
A country on the European landmass, or on the islands off it.
This rule is ours. It is not borrowed from any standard, so it is a choice rather than an authority, and you may reasonably disagree with where it lands.
THE MEMBERS ARE ITALY, GREECE, CYPRUS, FRANCE, TURKEY AND GERMANY. This sentence has now been wrong twice: it said Italy was the only member until the Greek build, and it said Italy, Greece and Cyprus from 15 Oct 2026 until the German build on 18 Oct, by which time France and Turkey had joined and it was two countries out of date. A caveat that LISTS its members goes stale every time one is added, and nothing checks it. GERMANY IS THE FIRST MEMBER WITH NO MEDITERRANEAN COASTLINE -- the other five are all in mediterranean as well, so until now the two hubs held the same five countries. This sentence used to say Italy was the only one, which stopped being true at the Greek build and was corrected on 15 Oct 2026. CYPRUS IS THE FIRST MEMBER THAT DOES NOT SATISFY THE RULE ABOVE, and it is recorded here because this caveat previously promised that the countries sitting in both Europe and Asia would be decided here, in the open, when a recipe needed them to be. Cyprus is that recipe. THE RULE SAYS "on the European landmass, or on the islands off it" and Cyprus is an island off ASIA MINOR -- nearer Turkey and Syria than Greece. It is in europe on a POLITICAL AND CULTURAL basis rather than a geographical one: it is a member state of the European Union and is conventionally placed in Europe. Roy chose mediterranean+europe on 15 Oct 2026, from options that included mediterranean alone, mediterranean+asia, and all three. THE RULE TEXT IS DELIBERATELY NOT WIDENED TO COVER IT. Widening it would re-base Italy's and Greece's membership on something neither was judged by, and both satisfy the geographical rule plainly. A stated rule with one recorded exception is honest; a rule quietly stretched until nothing is an exception is not. THE NEXT ONES ARE HARDER AND ARE STILL OPEN. Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia all straddle the two, and none is settled by EU membership the way Cyprus is. They will be decided here too, when a recipe needs them.
