Percentile calculator

The value at a given percentile, and the percentile rank of a given value — two different questions that share a word. Both answered, under all nine published definitions. Nothing you type here leaves your browser — it is worked out on your own device, so there is nothing to send and nothing to log.

Two different questions share one word

What is the 90th percentile? and what percentile is this value at? are not the same question, and this page answers both — calculators that answer only one leave people guessing which they got.

The second has its own ambiguity. A value equal to some of your data can be counted as above them, below them, or half and half. Counting ties as half is the usual convention and is generally what a percentile rank in test scoring means, but both are shown.

And the same nine definitions apply

A percentile is a quantile, so everything on the quartile page about the nine published definitions applies here too. The 90th percentile of your data is several different numbers depending which is used, and the table above gives all of them.

This matters most where percentiles carry consequences: growth charts, exam grades, service-level targets, salary bands. A contract promising a “95th percentile response time” without saying how it is computed has left something material undefined.
