PIANO MAKERS ============================================================================== WHAT THIS IS, AND WHAT IT IS NOT. The 222 companies named on Wikipedia's "List of piano manufacturers", extracted from the article on 2026-09-11 rather than recalled. 49 are listed as active and 173 as defunct. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_piano_manufacturers A name here means Wikipedia files it as a piano manufacturer. It does NOT mean a dating scheme exists, is published, or can be transcribed. THE NUMBER THAT MATTERS IS THE OTHER ONE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Wikipedia keeps a SECOND list, "List of piano brand names", and it holds 1182 names against this list's 222. The gap is not an oversight. Most of those names are STENCIL PIANOS: instruments built by one company and sold under another company's name, a practice so widespread in the American piano trade that the name on the fallboard is routinely not the name of the maker. This governs everything on the piano page. A serial number was stamped by whoever actually built the instrument. Looking it up against the brand painted on the front can return a confident, precise, wrong year. AND THE TABLES THEMSELVES ARE SOMEBODY'S PROPERTY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Wikipedia's own article opens by defining a piano atlas as "a book that contains detailed information about piano manufacturers, often including indexes that can match a piano's serial number to its production date". Those books are in copyright and in print. The Pierce Piano Atlas is a commercial publication, not a public reference. Retyping its year-by-year tables would be copying a book, and no amount of attribution fixes that. So this page can only compute a year where THE MAKER publishes the figures. Everywhere else it says who does hold them and stops. THE FULL LIST (222 names) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ [def] A. B.
